Khatu Shyam Ji Story

Khatu Shyam Ji, also known as Barbarika, is a revered deity in Hinduism, particularly in the region of Rajasthan, India. His story is deeply rooted in the Mahabharata, one of the major ancient Indian epics.

Barbarika was the son of Ghatotkacha, a prominent demon who was a devoted follower of Lord Krishna. Ghatotkacha was known for his valor and loyalty, and his son Barbarika inherited these qualities. However, Barbarika’s story takes a unique turn in the epic.

As a young prince, Barbarika was known for his immense strength and extraordinary skills in warfare. He was so powerful that he had three incredible boons from his mother, the ability to become invisible, to hold the whole world in his fist, and to possess the power to defeat anyone in battle. His strength and abilities were unmatched, making him a formidable warrior.

Before the great Kurukshetra war, Barbarika decided to join the side of the Kauravas. However, he was stopped by Lord Krishna, who appeared in disguise to test his devotion. Krishna, seeing Barbarika’s extraordinary capabilities, feared that his participation would make the battle unfair. Therefore, Krishna asked Barbarika to give a demonstration of his skills. Barbarika, without hesitation, began to show his power by piercing arrows that could hit any target, no matter how small.

Realizing the potential danger that Barbarika could pose in the war, Krishna made a request. He asked Barbarika to provide him with a guarantee that he would not fight in the battle. Barbarika agreed but requested that Krishna grant him the vision to witness the grand war. Krishna granted his request, but with a condition: Barbarika would have to surrender his head to be able to observe the war from a hilltop.

Barbarika agreed to this condition and sacrificed his head as promised. His head was placed on a hilltop where he could watch the entire battle unfold. After the war, Krishna honored Barbarika’s sacrifice by blessing him with a special status. He declared Barbarika as a true devotee and a symbol of unwavering devotion.
