History of the Palani Temple
According to legend, one day Sage Narada came to Mount Kailash to offer the fruit of knowledge (Gnana-Palam). Lord Shiva was unsure which of his two sons should receive it, so he decided to give the fruit to the one who could circle the earth three times first.
Lord Murugan (Karthikeya) accepted the challenge and began his journey around the world on his peacock. Ganesha, believing that his world was his parents, simply circled them three times and won the fruit.
Angry with the decision, Murugan felt he needed to grow up and decided to stay on Palani Hill.
One of the 18 great Hindu sages, Bogar, built the idol of Lord Murugan on the hilltop. This idol is made from a mixture of nine poisonous substances, which, when combined in the right proportions, form an eternal medicine.
